Food From The Hood

Totally random, but saw a mention in the Green America's Winter 2009 Newsletter and thought it is worth a mention under here's-a-creative-way-to-get-to-an-economy-that-supports-a-triple-bottom-line (people, planet and profits) category:

Food From the Hood is a student-managed business that started out of an unused garden at Crenshaw High in LA that sells salad dressings (in leading SoCal grocery stores, and even on amazon.com) and where profits provide scholarships for kids going to college ($140K to date).

  1. Definitely a good find. It's stuff like this that will really affect communities and hopefully get communities back into a self-sustained cycle, not this endless cycle of outward flows of the resources that communities need (money, people, spirit).
