As a follow up to the previous post about animal trafficking, and to highlight the plight of the big cats of the world, I wanted to share a new Initiative sponsored by the National Geographic Society called the Big Cats Initiative. It has been created to attempt to bring together various stakeholders and design programs that can actually help preserve habitat, grow populations, and create cooperation within communities to save these majestic animals.
Estimated populations:
Lions - 20,000, down from 450,000 less than a century ago
Cheetahs - 7,500
Snow Leopards - 6,000
Tigers (all species) - 4,000
It really begs the question - if we humans can't find a way to save the big cats, flagship animals that everyone can agree are pretty amazing - then what of all of the other less attractive and mesmerizing animals on this planet. Is there any hope at all for them?
The Big Cats Initiative.
